The Strongest Link

When cancer enters into the life of an individual it also enters into the life of those around them.  It affects their children, their parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers, friends, and anyone who cares about them.  HCM was founded on the belief that no matter what is thrown at us, if we bond together and create a network of caring and compassionate people then we can get through anything.  This is what we call The Strongest Link and it gets stronger every single day!

Financial Support Program

For individuals battling cancer who need financial assistance, we help with expenses such as medical bills,

groceries, travel costs, necessary school supplies for children, clothing for children, and important monthly bills.

Daily Task Support Program

We provide volunteer assistance so individuals and families can focus on their cancer treatment and recovery while not having the stress of normal every day tasks weighing on their shoulders.  This can include things such as general house work, landscaping and lawn care, preparing meals, keeping up with the laundry, and anything else we can do to help.

How Families Locate Us

HCM Foundation works closely with the the Fox Chase Cancer Center social work department in order for families to learn more about us and utilize our services.  Fox Chase Cancer Center – a nonprofit institution formed in 1974 by the union of the Institute for Cancer Research and the American Oncologic Hospital, one of the nation’s first cancer hospitals.  By receiving family referrals from FCCC, it allows our funds to help as many people that we can without limiting where they must live in order to gain our support.

HCM Providing Support

December 2011 - HCM assists with rent payment and eviction notice
Elizabeth is a 49 year old female who was recently diagnosed with endometrial cancer. She has had to miss multiple days of work the last two months due to doctor appointments and treatment.  This has set her back significantly and she was unable to pay her rent and water bill for last month, plus a late fee.  She also was not able to pay rent this month by December 1st, which has added another late fee.  She was discharged from the hospital on December 9th after having surgery to treat her recent cancer diagnosis.  When she came home that same day she opened a piece of mail which had an eviction notice for her apartment. Her lease is due to renew at the end of the year and the eviction notice read that if she cannot clear her last two months of rent by 12/31 she will have to exit the apartment by 1/31.  Elizabeth was doing fine with her rent payments before the cancer, so it is evident that if she can get over this small hump and the treatment works then she can begin to work again and have zero problems making future payments.  She owed roughly $1,200 - HCM has cleared almost half of that debt and there were two other local non-profits that will help with the rest.  After we told the social worker we could help, this is what she wrote back to me in an email - "I just called Elizabeth to let her know.  She was very appreciative and even started crying.   I told her that was not your intent in helping her.  Thank you so much."  I think we should consider those tears of joy and recognize that our compassion, empathy, and fundraising efforts not only helped Elizabeth from a financial standpoint - but I am sure it helped her feel loved around this holiday season.

December 2011 - HCM helps with two months of mortgage payments
Regina, 56, is fighting an ongoing battle with lung cancer.  She has been unable to work due to the progression of her illness and therefore has been unable to meet all of her living expenses.  She is currently two months behind on her mortgage totaling a little over $500.  HCM stepped in and cleared this financial hardship for Regina so she can remain focused on her treatments, get better, and get back to her steady job.

December 2011 - HCM helps with past due PECO payment
Karen is a 52 year old female battling breast cancer.  Since diagnosis, Karen has endured a rigorous treatment plan that included surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.  She is also followed by the Pain and Palliative Care Program for her treatment related pain that exacerbated pre-existing back and neck pain.  Karen's family has fallen behind on their PPL electric bill and her spirit remains high as she continues to try and manage her considerable financial stressors while undergoing the treatments related to her life-threatening diagnosis.  HCM stepped into this situation right away and helped Karen's family by paying $500 on their PPL bill.  We are certain Karen's spirit will continue to uplift her family members and those around her.

November 2011 - HCM helps with monthly utility bills
James is a 54 year old man who was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer four years ago and is still fighting to this day!  Recently James' condition took a turn and financial issues within the home have escalated to a very high level.  Not only is James battling cancer, but he and his wife have three children to raise and support.  His wife is working as a Registered Nurse and getting as much overtime as she can, but it is not enough to keep up with the bills.  HCM helped James and his family by paying one month of utilities (PECO, Philadelphia Gas Works, and Water Revenue Bureau.)

November 2011 - HCM helps with past due rent payment
Cynthia, 60 years old, is battling stage IV lung cancer.  She is being treated with weekly chemotherapy and is unable to work due to her diagnosis and treatment regimen.  Since she can't work and income is at a standstill, she has fallen behind on her rent the past couple months as she was trying to catch up on some of the other household bills.  She has two sons living with her and although she has not been served an eviction notice yet, she is quite concerned her landlord may do so if a good portion of past due rent is not paid soon.  Our goal is to not only relieve Cynthia's stress, but make certain the family has a roof over their head throughout this time.  HCM helped this family by putting $500 towards their past due rent payment.

October 2011 - HCM helps with PECO bill
Deborah, 47, has had to start a new regimen of chemotherapy, which she will likely receive for several months, for ovarian cancer.  She has an extremely limited income and is struggling to keep up with her bills amidst treatment.  A large chunk of her monthly income goes directly to her rent payment and it is often times difficult to keep up with the rest of her bills.  At this time her number one priority should be concentrating on the treatment phase - HCM helped Deborah by paying $500 on back payments for her PECO electric bill so she can continue to focus on the task at hand and live life on her own terms.

September 2011 - HCM assists with monthly utility bills
Anita is a 47 year old female with breast cancer.  She has a husband and two kids, 13 and 15.  Anita came to FCCC after undergoing a lumpectomy and an axilla node biopsy at another facility.  She needed a bilateral total mastectomies with bilateral muscle sparing Free Flap TRAM reconstruction.  She has had a very difficult time with the healing at her TRAM sites as well as her abdominal incision.  Anita is out of work, and the family has not been able to keep up with their bills.  They are very close to losing their home.  The water was shut off last month but she was able to get money together to get it turned back on.  The sewer bill is past due.  HCM has stepped in and paid the past due and current amount of the sewer bill and her next water bill.  We hope she can recover from the reconstruction surgery and continue to live life on her own terms.

August 2011 - HCM helps with monthly prescription
Lauryn is a 29 year old female battling endometrial neoplasia.  Lauryn is a sweet heart and over our conversations over the phone she is so appreciative of our help - she recently graduated college, started looking for work, however this pre cancer has thrown a kink in the situation and even moreso because she does not have health insurance.  Endometrial neoplasia is a premalignant lesion in the uterine lining that predisposes someone to endometrial cancer.  Lauryn is slated for surgery in September in order to prevent endometrial cancer, however, up until then she must take a medication named Megace, which is a bit under $100 for 30 days.  The American Cancer Society has provided her with a $300 grant up until now, but it has since run out, so the social work department has requested our help.  We went out and got Lauryn a Walgreens Pharmacy gift card for $100 and mailed it to her.  She has called us multipile times thanking us for the help.  We have helped Lauryn for five consecutive months and it has helped her keep focus on what is important.

July 2011 - HCM helps with electric bill to gain apartment lease
Carol is a 57 yr old female battling ovarian cancer.  Carol was originally nominated back in October 2010 in reference to her electric bill, however, the patient couldn't produce an actual copy of the bill in order for us to make payment.  What happened was, where Carol lived she received a shut off notice from PSE & G.  She never paid it, and within that time frame her landlord received a foreclosure on the property and Carol had to move out and stayed with a relative for that time.  She has since moved on and attained an apartment, however, PSE & G will not turn on her electric until she pays the balance on her account which is $312.11.  She was finally able to produce a copy of the bill and so HCM approved and paid the balance ASAP so Carol can continue living as she was.

July 2011 - HCM assists with mortgage
Matthew is a 45 yr old male with retroperitoneal liposarcoma, which is a type of skin cancer.  The cancer was initially diagnosed in June 2009, however he is now having a recurrence in the abdomen, pretroperitoneum and liver.  Inside the home is Matthew's wife and three kids, 14, 17, 18.  With the sudden advancement in cancer, he cannot work - the one bill the family is struggling with is mortgage and potentially losing their home.  HCM helped this family by paying their monthly mortgage bill.

June 2011 - HCM helps with monthly rent payment
Cynette is a 45 yr old female battling a recurrence of breast cancer.  She has two children, 17 and 16, is unable to work due to the treatments, having a difficult time managing all of her bills.  Cynette was nominated by the social worker who asked if HCM can help with her monthly rent payment.  We were put in touch with her landlord and sent $500 to be put towards her rent.  We hope this will help her get through this tough time and she can continue working post treatment.

June 2011 - HCM helps turn electric back on
Renaye is a 61 year old female battling breast cancer (I believe - I actually have to confirm that with the social worker, this referral happened so quick).  The cancer is very advanced and it has created a bad situation for her.  Renaye woke up on June 23rd and PECO shut her power off because of backed up payments.  The social worker called PECO and they said due to her medical situation they will consider taking a lesser payment to get it turned back on.  HCM stepped in at that very moment, called PECO, made payment, and they said by 3pm that day the electric will be turned back on for another 30 days at which point another payment will be needed.

May 2011 - HCM assists with monthly rent payment
Chicqueta is a very pleasant 32 year old woman who was recently diagnosed with a Thymoma.  She is an RN who works in an assisted living ,but has had to stop working during her intensive chemotherapy.  Her treatment included inpatient chemo for 5days in a row for 4 treatments.  She will then be evaluated for surgery.  Her hopes are to return to work after surgery. She has been struggling to make ends meet and pay her bills and her rent is one of the more pressing issues she is experiencing.  She has two children as well and has been trying to maintain a positive outlook.  HCM stepped in and helped by putting $500 towards her monthly rent.

May 2011 - HCM Assists With Grocery Cost While On Extended Treatment Stay
Fighting acute myelogenous leukemia, this patient must receive chemo treatment once a month over the course of 6 days.  Traveling over two hours for the treatment, it is impossible to drive back and forth each day so he and his family stay at the Fox Chase Hope Lodge to make it as easy as possible.  One main concern this family had while staying at the Hope Lodge is grocery and food costs.  HCM will cover their food costs over the course of the next few months for each week they are staying at the Hope Lodge.  While speaking with this family, they said, “the thing about cancer is it doesn't affect just the patient, it affects the entire family."  We agree and continue to thank our supporters for supplying funds to help families impacted by cancer!

April 2011 - HCM Helps Patient Stay Comfortable While In Treatment
Just days before starting another round of chemo, this patient mentioned she enjoyed reading and wanted a way to read while resting between treatments.  Making her more comfortable in body, mind, and spirit - HCM purchased a kindle book the day before she started her treatment. A few weeks later we received a thank you card from her that read "you are providing miracles for people with no hope and are fulfilling their lives with hope.  Thank you for your generosity."

April 2011 - HCM Covers the Cost For Prescription Glasses
Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 and again in 2010, it seems to be the small things that count for many patients.  In the midst of cancer treatment, it is important to keep up with other medical appointments such as the annual eye exam.  Many insurances cover this, but they may not cover the cost of glasses or contacts.  HCM helped this patient by paying for her glasses so she may continue to focus on the important things at hand - beating breast cancer for the second time!

February 2011 - HCM Helps Patient Pay For Co-Pays
Battling metastatic prostate cancer requires certain medications that can become very costly depending on insurance.  HCM helps this patient in a crucial moment of their fight by helping pay $200 towards their co-payments.

December 2010 - HCM Pays One Month Rent For Patient
One year prior to her bladder cancer diagnosis, she lost her husband to cancer.  Now not only dealing with the loss of her partner, she is battling this disease and the medical bills that come with it.  One surgery after the next, trying to recover and get back on her feet, but it is impossible to work throughout this process.  Falling several months behind in her rent payments, HCM stepped in and helped this patient battle her cancer by paying one month rent.

December 2010 - HCM Helps Family Stay Close to Patient During Surgery
Diagnosed with lung cancer in 2000, numerous surgeries, countless bouts of chemo and radiation - there are still more surgeries in store for this patient.  Traveling far to the hospital and with an extended stay to recover, his family wants to be close to him for what hopes to be the final successful surgery.  HCM helped pay for a week stay at the Coventry House so his family could physically and emotionally support his surgery and recovery.

December 2010 - HCM Purchases Telephone And Monthly Plan For Patient
This weekend HCM gave some assistance by purchasing a telephone and monthly plan for a patient so the hospital may keep in contact with her during a clinical trial.  Originally diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma, the cancer has since spread to her lungs, bone, liver, and brain. Continually fighting, she also is a Mom that holds the responsibility of raising two teenage daughters.  HCM will continue to pay for her monthly telephone bill so she may not only keep in contact with the hospital during treatment, but also keep in touch with her family members and friends more often.

December 2010 - HCM Helps With Cost of Necessary Medication
Fighting Stage 3 ovarian cancer for several months and holding on strong, this patient developed severe blood clots and needed a certain type of medication asap in order to survive and continue her fight.  This medication was not covered by insurance and was very expensive.  That is when HCM stepped in and provided $500 to be used in order to get this patient a 15 day supply of the medication so she may regain hope, travel back home, spend time with her family, and continue her fight.

November 2010 - HCM Assists With Medical Equipment Costs For Patient With Lymphoma
While in the hospital overnight for several nights, this patient required constant oxygen in order to breathe.  This oxygen cost totaled to over $800 and was not covered by insurance.  Still undergoing treatment, this cost became a huge burden.  HCM assisted by helping pay down the amount for this bill.

November 2010 - HCM Helps Patient With Cervical Cancer Start Phase I Trial
Getting transportation to treatment can be a challenge for many, especially if you live far away from the hospital and don’t have a vehicle. Phase I Clinical Trials can be very long days totaling up to 14 hours of testing.  HCM was very happy to help this patient during the clinical trial period with a hotel room providing shuttle service to and from the hospital.

October 2010 - HCM Provides Assistance With Prescription Copays For a Patient With Sarcoma
While on 12 different medications, the monthly cost of prescriptions will add up and become very burdensome to keep up.  HCM provides a little bit of help to this patient by covering the cost of several prescription medications.

October 2010 - HCM Helps With The Balance Payment of Compression Garments
Compression garments are often prescribed for patients with severe lymphedema, but many times not covered by insurance.  That is where HCM steps in.  In order to make the patient more comfortable, covering the cost for compression garments is very important to us.

October 2010 - HCM Gives Hope By Assisting Single Mom With One Month’s Rent Payment
Surviving breast cancer and raising a teenage daughter takes a very STRONG MOM!  With medical bills, school supplies, groceries, and other bills adding up, it can make things very difficult.  Taking care of the small things while this family could focus on the big things is how we stay true to The Strongest Link!

May 2010 - Mothers Day
HCM provides a little bit of comfort for a young mother battling colon cancer.  Having to travel several hours for doctor appointments, miss work days, and still raise three young children, HCM wanted to help this family with the cost of several essential items.  Our Mothers Day gift consisted of a $175 gift card to Weis Market (groceries), $175 Target gift card (clothing and other items for children), and a $150 Wawa gift card (gas).  The strength we found within this family has touched us all within HCM :)

December 2009 - Happy Holidays
HCM is very proud to provide a service to someone who, in our heart, is a very special person.  We were able to
provide some relief this holiday season for one inspirational mother who has been battling cancer for the last two
years.  In addition to her fight, she has the selfless responsibility of raising her four year old daughter.  We are happy
to have provided her with a $200 Target gift card to help her with purchasing holiday gifts for her daughter.  We
also provided her with a $50 Ralph Lauren gift card so she may pick out a gift for herself!  As part of the HCM
mission, we provide support for the entire family and we hope that our service has helped this family have a
memorable holiday.  We welcome them to our HCM family  :)
