Overview
The story behind HCM
The HCM Foundation was founded by Mike Marsteller in October 2009 and was created based on the learning experiences he took away from the impact cancer had on his family. In 1983 Mike turned one year old and his Father, Harvey C. Marsteller (HCM), lost his battle with colon cancer at the early age of 30. What was a perfectly healthy young family with a husband, wife, and two young children all of a sudden became a single parent household because cancer entered their lives. When Mike’s Father was struck by cancer, it struck his entire family and the extended network surrounding them. His Mother was faced with many decisions with the biggest dilemma of raising two children, ages one and five, without a spouse. How would there be time for her to grieve the loss of her life long partner and the person she thought she would spend the rest of her life with when she must continue to work, provide and raise two children, keep up with the household chores, and still continue on the path to achieve her own goals? Family and friends certainly played a tremendous role, but in due time they must continue with their own life and contribute to raise their own children and achieve their own goals.
As Mike got older and 25 years taking place after his Father passed away, he started to listen to more and more stories of cancer significantly impacting families in many different ways. Some of which were very similar to how cancer impacted his family. Identifying with each scenario, it was time to do something. It was finally time to do more than just say, “I understand and I wish there was something I could do to help.” It was time to wish harder, develop ideas, and create action in order to build a stable Foundation where the support for families who are significantly impacted by cancer will be support that stays with them for their entire lifetime. It is support for Mom, Dad, Brother, Sister, Grandfather, Grandmother, and Friends. We will bond together and BE THE STRONG LINK that will never be broken!

During the next few years we want to grow HCM into local communities surrounding us and build long lasting, comforting, and meaningful relationships that will support those significantly impacted by cancer.

and their families. We are committed to enhancing the quality of life for those afflicted with cancer
by connecting those in need of assistance with those willing to offer support.
